To the side are drawings I created when investigating the sound, movement and lighting of my building, as part of my tutorial I was asked to look at the circulation of guests and inhabitants and they vary depending on whether F.Scott and Daisy are hosting or whether they're having a day to themselves. The red lines show the paths of the guests and orange show everyday life. As well as being asked to look at circulation I was also asked to look at lighting to see whether my building is going to get enough light and whether the light will be able to reach further back rooms. It's important the rooms have a lot of light so they can see what they're doing and create a fresh feeling home. After looking at the mapping for parties I decided to look at sounds and which rooms would be the loudest, this is shown on the final diagram with the green lines showing different intensities of sound and I've tried to put these rooms closest to each other. |

Today's studio session we focused on refining the layout so that we can start to draw accurate representations of the site and the proposal. I began the day with a tutorial where I decided with my tutor that I should do some rearranging of the rooms so that they flow a whole lot better and have a more logical thinking pattern. After creating the shell because I'd made some changes I decided to cover all the floors with paper, this worked to my advantage and helped bring out the rooms and create an easy to follow model. I've made use of the height with two floors in the bedrooms and a tall ceiling in the dining/entertainment room as well as the living room which you can overlook from the library.
Creating mood boards is the initial start for inspiration and gathering ideas. For me making mood boards helps me decide colour schemes and the kind of objects I want to put in my space. Making individual boards for each room will help enable me to create rooms tailored for certain people of activities.
After last Friday's session I began making sketch models of the site, this one below is a 1:100 model of the shell of the building, after making this I've decided I'm going to make plans on paper to that size and slide them in to see what they look like. This will help me decide the best floor plan. The models below are a collection of three that are at a 1:50 scale, after developing my floor plan I created these to give a larger and better idea of scale and how much I can fit into each room, they all fit together to make the whole length of the site and I can take them apart as I wish. They're not finished yet but I hope to finish them next Friday in class.
After deciding to do the Great Gatsby as my book I looked into 1920's architecture and features of this architecture that I could apply to my design. The era was very flamboyant and extroverted with clear attention to detail. I like the geometrical patterns and uniformity of design but I'd still like to keep some areas minimal in my building. I also want to have a lot of light on show.
Today we spent the day in the studio working on the floor plans and sections of our site's and having a little look at the interior. By creating my mood board I've been able to make a good start with designing as I've had inspiration throughout the day. I decided to have two floors in my building to maximise space for the author and character, I looked at creating individual 'escapes' for the two to retreat to and to relax in their own personalized space. The dining room is important for throwing parties and having social occasions and so I've designed it to be two floors high and to be as large as the living room area. Below are some images from the day. I also mocked up my initial design idea on sketchbook pro to refine the lines and provide a clearer outline of the floor plan I designed. This is my first idea so it will change but is gives you a good idea of the route I want to go down. I haven't labelled the rooms yet but this will come with further development. My feedback session was very positive and I know what I need to do during the next week.
I created a mood board of photographs and textures that represent the imagery The Great Gatsby creates, this includes very lavish and 'over the top' decoration with large chandeliers, gold accessories and beautiful furniture. I've focused of the interior for this mood board and looked at spaces that have a lot of light, I want to focus on creating natural light in my space and emphasising whites/gold in the décor to reflect this light.
Because I want to create a space full of light I have looked at mapping the light path around the chosen sight to determine where I should place windows, this diagram is a large help and has enabled me to also add the blue lines which show where the most noise comes from (the road). Figuring out where the noise and light comes from I can appropriately design the space to the most efficient way I can.
